ASP.NET 2.0

I just attended a conference on ASP.NET 2.0, this version is coming out in a year. Beta should be available for download in a few months. This new version is absolutely unbelievable. I'll definitely be upgrading to this as soon as I can. When that happens, EQDiva will be a portal website, where you can choose/move/delete personalized content around. This version also saves about 80% writing code for those common, boring tasks like authentication, membership, roles, personalization, logins, and much, much more. These will all be built-in APIs now! :)

    Re: ASP.NET 2.0

I got a few books, and plan to do whatever it takes to get my hands on the beta version (probably paying $1000 or so), but so far the site has been keeping me pretty busy. I plan to rewrite the whole site in .NET 2.0 and be one of the first big sites using it!

    Re: ASP.NET 2.0

hehe let me know if you need help on that. Ive been itching for a .NET programming project. Its getting so bad that ive started to design my own non everquest related site (well mainly a site I can use to bypass proxy servers at work, I know I could always just remotely log into my home machine, but its far more fun to design something to do the virtual leg work for me). Im definitely looking forward to the changes in 2.0 !!!

    Re: ASP.NET 2.0

will the 2.0 beta be part of the MSDN subscription service? Tell us more! I remember you talking about this a while ago but can't for the life of me remember or find your answer, so I'll ask again: any chance you'd open the current eqdiva.com code for our perusal? I wouldn't expect you to open source it or release copyright or anything but I think more than a few of love checking out other peoples' bits. :D -gnashii

    Re: ASP.NET 2.0

I did at one time (back when I tried giving away the site) zip up my entire code and had it up for download. But it isn't web code like anyone is probably used to in terms of php or asp. It's a multi-tier app with the data, business logic and gui all separated, which I think is really cool. The code gets compiled into one or two .dlls that run the site. But I expect it to be a bit confusing to your average web programmer, hehe, I probably scared them off those who did download it. Now that I'm working on the site again, I would still like to give away the code, but I'd like to clean it up a bit. This eqdiva project has taught me tons. So, in short, I would like to open source the EQDiva site again actually but I do want to make sure I am ready for that. I can post little snippets of code in this forum though. Not today but I will try to get around to it soon. As for ASP.NET 2.0 you should be getting a beta copy soon if you have an MSDN subscription (which I do not yet).

    Re: ASP.NET 2.0

Kocho, I highly recommend an MSDN subscription! I hated paying out the big dollars (really big dollars to me when I first subscribed!) but have religiously resubscribed even though I'm mostly a 'nix guy. Heck, it actually works out to less $$ out than buying, say, a couple copies of XP Pro and Office **. I'm all for n-tier / MVC-style websites! As you've obviously discovered they rock the world when it comes to, well, all sorts of things. But I suspect I'd be preaching to the choir if I kept going, so I'll stop now :) Please, when you're comfortable with the state of your code (or even before) zip it up and post the project(s)! ** EDIT: well, not exactly :D although I did just set up another company (sole proprietorship) with the Microsoft ISV package which includes a 5-user Universal MSDN package for $375, a much better deal if you meet the requirements.

    Re: ASP.NET 2.0

I had an MSDN subscription last year. This year I went with the Microsoft Action Pack for $299 and I get quarterly updates. I might start up another MSDN subscription though when the next Visual Studio comes out, as the Action Pack for some reason excludes this.
